Through the first season, Heartstopper suggests that there could there is more behind Elle and Tao’s love story than either would like to admit.
At the start it’s clear that the move of Elle to Higgs has not been a good thing for Tao. While she’s no longer attending their high school Tao has been buying her favorite apple juice as if she was there. While Elle misses everyone to a certain extent but it’s clear that she’s not missing Tao most most.As things get better they are inseparable and often text when they’re together. Even when Elle is able to realize the love she has for Tao however, she is hesitant of declaring it at the final moment, leaving their relationship unspoken in the air…
But, by the end of season one, Elle isn’t the only one who is surrounded by illustrated leaves , and all of the other cute aspects that the show makes use of to represent love.
Yes, Tao has a crush on Elle as well, though it’s not been apparent to anyone except Tao right from the beginning. However, aside from the love that William Gao and Yasmin Finney are able to share in these scenes there’s an additional, intimate hint at the deepest feelings of Tao’s passion for Elle.
While we don’t get to see this happening on the series, Heartstopper fans are aware that Elle was suspended frequently at Truham before she was recognized as trans. The reason is because she grew her hair more than what the dress code permitted.
As a result, a number of viewers online believe this is the reason Tao is sporting longer locks in the show too. To help Elle as she transitions, Tao grew his hair out as well. This could also be the reason why his hair is curled at the bottom. It lets him keep his hair longer and still strictly adhering to the strict dress code.
It’s a minor detail but it’s a crucial one, and is also supported through comparisons with the source material. The comics show that Tao wears shorter, more messy hair. However, here it appears that the Netflix crew has decided to cut his hair in this distinctive manner. What else could they do to do this, if not to give an additional significance?
There’s no proof that the incident was deliberate -at the very least, none that we’ve been able to find. However, Tao is extremely loyal to those whom he loves, sometimes to his disadvantage.
In the days when Charlie was being targeted by his schoolmates, Tao did the best to stand to defend his friend the most. Therefore, it’s totally normal to imagine Tao doing the same thing for Elle regardless of whether he realized the extent to which he truly loved Elle back then or not.
