Michelle Rodriguez, Fast & Furious star, has admitted that Letty Ortiz’s character changed after she was cast. She refused to play her the way she was originally written.
The actress spoke as part of Entertainment Weekly’s oral history on the action franchise. She said that her character was not to be reduced to being just the girlfriend of Dominic Toretto, Vin Diesel.
Jordana Brewster (Rodriguez’s star) revealed that Rodriguez had “completely changed” her character after she read the script.
Michelle was adamant that she wasn’t playing the role when Michelle read it. She then changed the role completely,” she explained. It went from being a trophy girlfriend to a complex character.”
Rodriguez stated that she wanted the movie realistic and that Letty not being a “trophy girlfriend” would have no meaning. She told the producers that they needed to make some changes.
She said, “It was a reality-check for them to realize that the streets don’t work like this.” “You can’t just fall in love with a hot guy. There is a hierarchy. Is it possible for a hot guy to get beaten up by the woman he is dating? If he can’t, don’t be tempted to date him.
“I had to teach them how to keep it real. I know that Hollywood is popular, but this is how it works. I won’t be a slut in front millions of people so don’t expect me to change. They figured it out.
Neal H Moritz, producer, said that the team was happy to have different perspectives. He explained: “Obviously, the characters were written and edited by men. So it was nice for us to have that female perspective. We really tried to dive deep.”

Rodriguez revealed that Letty was given her own fight in the film because she didn’t want Letty left out of the action.
She said that she fought to see Letty get into a fight. “It was a good example of how you can’t just sit back and watch your boys play without getting dirty,” she added. “If you don’t, are you only there to model?” It doesn’t work for me.
“So I fought for it – then I remember hitting him in the face by accident! It was so wrong. The same thing happened in Girlfight, and Avatar. It wasn’t my intention, it’s just how I do it.
Letty and her gang will return to the franchise’s next installment, F9 this summer. Vin Diesel promised that the movie would be an unforgettable experience for long-standing fans.
