New Amsterdam season 5 ‘s finale featured Freema Agyeman making an unexpected appearance as Dr Helen Sharpe.
The Doctor Who star had to step down earlier this year. However, showrunner David Schulner said that they needed her back to “test Max’s resolve”.
She appeared on a TV screen nearby, representing the NHS’s ongoing fight to beat cancer. This was just as Dr Max Goodwin (and Dr Elizabeth Wilder) were about to return home.
“We knew that we wanted Helen Sharpe to come back to Max’s house to test his resolve. To see if he still loves Wilder. Schulner spoke TVLine to determine if he is truly healed.
“And we knew that we wanted it to occur at the worst possible time for him.”
He teased that we would “definitely see Helen” in the next episode, although it isn’t clear if it will be an in-the flesh encounter between and the ex-lovebirds.
“Will Max run to Sharpe?” Will he go all out for Wilder? Schulner stated that Sharpe has many unanswered queries.
“But, at the exact same time, Wilder promises something new. Max will be put through the paces so that any decision he makes is well-earned.
When Agyeman left the New Amsterdam cast season 5, she wrote to Instagram: “I would like to thank you for your unending dedication and deliciously ferocious assistance.”
“I feel extremely fortunate to have connected so many of you while rolling around under the skin of Helen Sharpe, witnessing every ebb or flow of your emotional investment into her.
“What an amazing ride!” “Thank you for sharing it with me.”
New Amsterdam is broadcast on NBC America. Prime Video and NOW in the UK carry the show. You can also watch it on All4.
