Two seasons later, all our ” young princes” are changing and evolving somewhat. But not so August, the “villain” of this piece. Is he a genuinely nice, strong guy now that he has made a complete turnaround? No, not at all. But , Malte Gardinger and ‘s nuanced script have allowed August to show his soft, almost sweet side. This makes August even more interesting to watch.
Malte Gardinger about his character’s journey in season 2 , including August and Sara’s relationship. And those last moments that changed everything.
While August is a questionable character, we see his humanity in season 2. Do you think he is more than a “villain strong”?
Yeah. This season emphasizes this in every character. We are able to see the flaws of every character and also discover the possible positive sides.
What was the most challenging thing about playing August in Young Royals.
It was difficult to get into this kind of space. This is the first time I have ever had to return to a character. It’s different. He has changed a lot. It was challenging to be him and return to a place, but also to have a completely new mindset.
August’s vulnerability is evident in his relationship to Sara. This also means that there are many naked and shirtless scenes. Are they difficult to film or just part of the job?
No. It’s uncomfortable for me. One scene is where I am completely naked. This is more of a personal growth type thing.
Because August was naked. It was a stark contrast to his phone conversations. That was what I wanted. The results were great. It was an enjoyable experience.
In a very real way, sex feels awkward. August may be reaching for the condom while August is trying to get it. What makes you believe it is important to show that side of teenage sex?
We wanted to make it both fun and awkward. It is awkward sometimes. But it’s a positive way. It doesn’t need to be awkward. This can be a beautiful, awkwardness where it’s pleasant. That kind of awkwardness can be captured with the fiddling and the giggles and the fumbling about.
The season two finale features a very intense scene in which Wilhelm shoots a hunting rifle at August. Could you please tell us more about the filming of that scene?
This must have been his lowest and most difficult point in the entire series. Although it was not a loaded, real gun, it was quite frightening. You got into it. You see this barrel.
It was thrilling and fun, but also scary. It added something to the scene. It was fantastic. It was a great day.
August’s situation gets worse when Wilhelm takes over and delivers the speech at the last minute. What do you think August’s reaction is?
That could be the last straw for August. Wilhelm’s perspective was very much like “I don’t want to do that.”
August’s greatest dream is to be in his place. He was betrayed by me. “The second I get there?”
He took it very seriously, I believe. If there’s a third season, it will be fascinating to see how that plays out.
Also, we see Sara calling the police at the finale, possibly about August and the sex tape leaked. What do you expect to happen in season three of the series?
I hope to be able to better understand his thoughts and fears. This has always been my goal… I want him to look into his past and discuss his relationship with his father. I believe he is in a very dark place, especially with the things that have happened to Wilhelm and Sara.
I don’t know what he will do. He could do anything.
Was there a scene or moment you wanted to include but could not because of time constraints?
It’s not something I have seen. It’s too scary for me [ Laughs]. It might have something else. I’m not sure what. We’ll see.
It’s something new for me because I feel like I tend to be in a bad spot every time I look at myself. I try to not watch any videos.
What are you hoping viewers take away from the show?
There are many things you can take away from this season. Trust your gut, I think. People will always try to… Wilhelm is the prince. If you’re under pressure or told to do something, you shouldn’t be afraid to follow your instincts. malte gårdinger
